1 _____ Electrophysiology is the branch of neuroscience

that explores the electrical activity of living neurons

and investigates the molecular and cellular processes

4 _ that govern their signaling. Neurons communicate

using electrical and chemical signals. Electrophysiology

techniques listen in on these signals by measuring electrical

7 _ activity, allowing scientists to decode intercellular and

intracellular messages. Electrophysiology is a major tool in

understanding how information is processed in the brain.

10_ Each electrophysiology lab setup is different, reflecting the

questions being addressed, the requirements of the

experiment, and the personal preferences of the

13_ investigators. There is, however, a standard set of

equipment necessary and desirable to record electrical

signals from neurons. Electrophysiology testing is used

16_ primarily in patients who have an arrhythmia diagnosed.

Occasionally, if a patient presents with palpitations that

appear to be consistent with or highly suspicious of a

19 _ supraventricular tachycardia, then an electrophysiology test

may be useful without further diagnostic evaluation.
