01 Jean-Michel Basquiat (born December 22, 1960, Brooklyn, New York, U.S. —died August 12,
02 1988, New York City) was an American painter known for his raw gestural style of painting with
03 graffiti-like images and scrawled text. Basquiat was raised in a middle-class home in Brooklyn.
04 His mother was an American of Puerto Rican descent. She encouraged Basquiat's interest in art,
05 taking him to New York City's great art museums. His parents eventually separated, and he and
06 his sisters lived with their father in Puerto Rico from 1974 to 1976. His mother was diagnosed
07 as mentally ill and eventually was institutionalized.
08 Troubled by his early childhood, Basquiat dropped out of high school and left home at age
09 17.Helived ___ the streets, with friends, or __ abandoned buildings and began a graffiti campaign
10 with graffiti artists Al Diaz and Shannon Dawson. They created the persona SAMOO (said to
11 represent “same old shit”) and painted anonymous messages ___ walls around SoHo and the East
12 Village and on the D train of the New York City subway system. In the late 1970s that work—
13 together with the work of other graffiti artists—began to receive notice in the art world, and so

17 exhibition in “The Times Square Show” (1980). From there his career skyrocketed, and, until his

20 Lacking any formal training, Basquiat created highly expressionistic work that mixed graffiti
21 and signs with the gestural and intuitive approach of Abstract Expressionist painting. Although
22 much of his work addressed his personal angst in highly stylized self-portraits, he also alluded

24 writers. He appropriated and freely mixed motifs from African, Caribbean, Aztec, and Hispanic
