The following text refers to questions 31 to 35.

The BNCC treats English language teaching as a tool for global communication and social mobility

The Common National Curriculum Base (BNCC) is a normative document developed to guide educational institutions in their

curriculum, connected with lesson plans and pedagogical projects. After the change in the LDB in 2017, teaching the English

language has become mandatory from the 6th year of Primary Education, which has led to adaptations in the BNCC.

What is said about the English language at the BNCC

According to the BNCC notes for the English language, the text assumes that young people are active and participating citizens

in society. The teaching of English therefore needs to be contextualised, considering their demands, interests and multiple realities.

The idea is to ensure that teaching activities and experiences for learners are rooted in equity and democracy while integrating

different ways of belonging.

The fundamental right to learning

The BNCC reinforces and reaffirms the fundamental right of every child, young person and adult to access education. The

document points out, however, that the pedagogical proposals should seek the full development of young people and their

understanding of who they are in the world.

It is necessary to implement education to suit the needs of this group, ensuring that they benefit from this education. It is

therefore essential to situate the English language curriculum and the knowledge that will be mobilised considering their realities,

demands, and particularities.

Lingua franca and multiliteracies

The English language in the BNCC is considered a lingua franca, based on its role as a communication tool. As a result, young

people can have access to opportunities for personal and professional development as well as various cultural assets, such as

music, films, and experiences.

The perspective of approaching the English language towards its function as a lingua franca produces a series of effects.

Firstly, it places language teaching aligned with interculturality and the recognition of cultural diversity and plurality. Added to this,

is the concept of multiliteracies, in other words, the understanding that language is verbal-visual.

Both interculturality and multilingualism serve as a basis for teaching and learning processes marked by the experiences and

identities of young learners and their respective territories and cultures.

When we take the perspective of the lingua franca, an important point to consider is the diversity of uses and speakers who

decentralise linguistic precision based on standardised norms from user groups considered as “owners” of the language.

Simply put, the teaching of English should be multicultural, and not focused on an American or British parameter, for example.

The focus is therefore on intelligibility and communication rather than grammatical accuracy.

English Language in BNCC: sectioning by educational stages

Final years of Primary Education

In the final years of Primary Education, students should have language practices that help them improve their repertoires in

different fields of activity.

The main point is to develop contextualised activities that expand their ability to use the language, encouraging a sense of

protagonism and autonomy in an increasingly connected and globalised world.

Secondary Education

In Secondary Education, the goal is to consolidate and strengthen the competencies, skills, and learning developed in the final

years of Primary Education.

The focus is on fostering autonomy and protagonism, broadening debates on the importance of valuing diverse uses of

languages and how this is inserted into the various artistic and cultural manifestations.

It is important to ensure that learning is meaningful for young people and that they understand how the English language fits

into their different life projects.
