Denmark's Frederik X becomes king after Queen Margrethe abdicates

  1. Denmark turned a page in its history on Sunday when Queen Margrethe formally abdicated
  2. and her son became King Frederik X, with big crowds gathered in Copenhagen to witness history.
  3. On 14 January 2024, the hugely popular chain-smoking Queen Margrethe II, 83, left her residence
  4. at Copenhagen's Amalienborg Palace to Christiansborg Palace, the seat of government and
  5. parliament. There, at a Council of State, she signed a declaration of abdication ending her 52-
  6. year reign. Her 55-year-old son Frederik – who also attended the Council of State along with his
  7. Australian-born wife Mary and their eldest child, 18-year-old Prince Christian – automatically
  8. became king and head of state upon Margrethe's abdication.
  9. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen then proclaimed him King Frederik X on the balcony of
  10. Christiansborg Palace. "The balcony serves only this purpose," joked historian Lars Hovbakke
  11. Sorensen. "The last time, in 1972 (when Margrethe became queen after the death of her father),
  12. there were more than 10,000 people in the square below. We're expecting more this time," he
  13. said. Hotels and airline tickets have been fully booked since the queen dropped her bombshell
  14. abdication announcement in her annual televised New Year's Eve address. Aske Julius, a 27-year-
  15. old Copenhagen resident, said "More than half of the Danish population has never known anything
  16. else but the queen. She's really the embodiment of Denmark... the soul of the nation."
  17. Apart from the abdication, the protocol is largely similar to previous royal successions in
  18. Denmark. No foreign dignitaries or royals are invited, and there is no coronation or throne for the
  19. new monarch. The queen's abdication announcement stunned Danes, after she had repeatedly
  20. insisted she would follow tradition and reign until her death. She attributed her decision to health
  21. issues after undergoing major back surgery last year. Opinion polls show that more than 80
  22. percent of Danes support her decision. Margrethe will retain her title of queen and may represent
  23. the royal family on occasion.
  24. Experts say that passing the baton to her son now will give him time to flourish in his role
  25. as monarch, after gradually taking on increasing responsibilities. "She thinks the crown prince is
  26. totally ready to take over. And she wants to avoid a situation like in Great Britain where Prince
  27. Charles became King Charles after the age of 70," historian Hovbakke Sorensen said. Like his
  28. mother, Frederik, who has been crown prince since the age of three, enjoys the support of more
  29. than 80 percent of Danes. But he is expected to bring his own style to the monarchy, which dates
  30. back to the 10th-century Viking era.
