The Growing Sport of Stand-Up Paddling

  1. Stand-up paddle boarding is growing more and more popular these days. It is becoming the
  2. easy, and fun way to go and play while on the water. With nothing but minimum equipment, you
  3. can go and paddle anywhere from on a lake, a river, or the ocean. And because you are standing
  4. up, you get to see the entire view of what is around you, as well as everything on the horizon.
  5. It is also a full-body exercise routine and is becoming more popular as a cross-training activity
  6. used by snowboarders, skiers, and other athletes.
  7. You really do not need a whole lot of gear. Your biggest investment will be the board itself.
  8. Each board is sized differently and is based on the weight and experience of the paddler.
  9. Beginners usually start with a flatter, wider board that offers more stability. The more
  10. experienced paddler usually goes for the narrower, lighter board. Next would be your paddles,
  11. which are made with an angle in the shaft to achieve maximum efficiency. Your paddle should
  12. be approximately 6 to 8 inches above your height. Besides sunglasses and sunscreen, you can
  13. wear anything as long as it is clothing that will move well when you are wet. Also remember that
  14. the Coast Guard ____ paddleboards as vessels, so you are required to wear a flotation device
  15. when you are paddling on navigable waters.
  16. Choose ideal conditions to start out on when first learning the sport. Calm, flat water with
  17. no buoys and boats is a good idea. It is far easier to start by kneeling on the board than trying
  18. to stand upright on it. To help with balance while standing, keep your knees slightly bent, and
  19. your feet as parallel as possible, approximately hip-width apart, and centered as much as
  20. possible between the rails. Use your hips to balance; keep your shoulders and head upright and
  21. steady, and try to look level with the horizon, resisting the temptation to look down at your feet.
  22. Once you get your forward momentum going, your stability will increase also. This may take a
  23. little while to be able to do consistently, but when you build up your leg muscles, your core, and
  24. your fitness level, you will have an absolute blast doing stand-up paddle boarding.
