Language in the communicative approach is:

composed of elements that give it a unique rhythm and spirit. Functional vocabulary and core structure are key to the spirit of the language;

a system for the expression of meaning. It is considered as the primary function, being carried out through interactive and communicative activities;

meaningful, for this reason vocabulary, not grammar, is the essence of the language;

a system of rule-governed structures hierarchically arranged;

rather conventional, although memorization of whole meaningful texts is recommended.
