Earth Day

  16. on the premise that all people have a moral right to a healthy, sustainable environment. The Earth
  17. Day Network pursues this mission through education, public policy, and activism campaigns. These
  18. campaigns bring together more than 1 billion participants every year, making it one of the largest
  19. public, secular events in the world.
  20. The Earth Day Network pursues a set of core goals. The first is to broaden the meaning of
  21. the environment to include issues such as climate change, green schools and environmental
  22. curricula, green jobs, and renewable energy. The second is to diversify the movement by providing
  23. civic engagement opportunities at the local, state, national, and global levels around the world.
  24. And the third, to mobilize communities by working with partner organizations to provide
  25. opportunities for all citizens to become active in the environmental movement.
  26. This set of goals underlines Earth Day events and actions around the world. Elected officials
  27. can meet individuals and organizations to discuss environmental issues and encourage lifestyle
  28. changes such as reducing carbon footprint or recycling e-waste. Supporters might take action to
  29. raise awareness about climate change or work to conserve the world's biodiversity. Educators and
  30. the general public can use Earth Day’s education programs, which contain resources and solutions,
  31. to create a healthier, more sustainable planet. Advocates support projects that develop renewable
  32. energy sources and technologies as means of transitioning off of nonrenewable sources, such as
  33. coal and oil.
  34. Supporters can raise awareness about farming practices, such as the use of chemical
  35. pesticides, which contribute to environmental degradation, and also advocate for greater support
  36. of organic, local, and sustainable agricultural techniques. That may also help the creation of green
  37. industries and jobs that are connected to renewable energy sources. The “GREEN Schools
  38. Campaign” includes a focus on healthy school lunches, environmental classroom activities,
  39. outreach to local and national leaders, and an emphasis on sustainable building techniques.
  40. Supporters also work to encourage recycling and waste reduction, besides promoting
  41. environmental practices that respect biodiversity and the natural world for sustainable
  42. development.
  43. In only 40 years, Earth Day has evolved from a single day celebrating the environmental
  44. movement in the United States to a global network that empowers more than a billion people to
  45. better understand, protect, and improve the environment.
