Diabetes may be diagnosed based on plasma glucose criteria, either the fasting plasma glucose, value or the 2-hours plasma glucose, value during a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test or hemoglobin A1C criteria. The same tests may be used to screen for and diagnose diabetes and to detect individuals with prediabetes. It´s considered prediabetes individuals, those patients

A

with fasting plasma glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL. Fasting is defined as no caloric intake for at least 8 hours.

B

with a random plasma glucose ≥ 200 mg/dL.

C

with 2-hours plasma glucose ≥ 200 mg/dL, value during a 75-g oral using a glucose load containing the equivalent of 75 g anhydrous glucose dissolved in water.

D

with hemoglobin A1C between 5.7–6.4%.

E

that perform a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test, with plasma glucose measurement when patient is fasting and at 1 and 2 hours. Fasting: 92 mg/dL, 1 h: 180 mg/dL and 2h: 153 mg/dL.
